The connection between practice and theory is important as it shows one’s ability to use evidence to increase one’s understanding of ideal concepts, justify decision-making, and in order to perfect present and future practice of midwifery for the good of humanity. Included objectives were to assess the final year student’s theoretical knowledge, technical skills and challenges they encounter during maternity care services with respect to their code of ethics. This was a descriptive observational cross-sectional study targeting 92 final year midwifery students of the Fako division. Four school were chosen for this study (University of Buea, Biaka University Institute, Redemption Higher Institute of Biomedical Sciences and Maflekumen Higher Institute) and five hospitals (Buea Regional Hospital, CMA Muea, Limbe Regional Hospital, District Hospital Limbe and CMA limbe) using purposive sampling. Data was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire, which concerned to assessed the knowledge on quality maternity care and challenges they faced in the maternity. The observational- checklist was divided into 2 sections. The first section the skills carried on by the final year students in the maternity and the second part their ethical acquisition. Data was analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS), version 23. Of the 91 participants, 76 (83.5%) had good knowledge on quality maternity care, 64 (70.3%) had good skills on quality maternity care and 79 (86.8%) had good ethical acquisition on quality maternity care. Evidence showed that, students faced a lot of challenges in the maternity with first 88 (96.7%) for the lack of instruments. The knowledge, skills and ethical acquisition of the final year midwifery students was good. A large list of challenges like vaginal examination and oxygen administration was faced by the students and it should be taken into consideration as they may influence future acquirement of competences, which may in turn affect patient care.
